Guided Hiking Tours in Gauteng, North West & Mpumalanga
Go Hiking SA runs guided group hikes across Gauteng, North West, and Mpumalanga — from free Sunday-morning walks close to Johannesburg to overnight escapes in Mpumalanga's gorges. This page covers what a guided hiking tour with us actually looks like, who leads them, and how to book one.
Why Hike With a Guide
A good guide changes what a hike actually is. Beyond route-finding and safety — which matter more than most people expect once you're off a municipal trail — a guide knows which flora and fauna you're looking at, keeps a group moving at a pace that works for everyone, and turns a walk into something you'll actually remember. Several of our best experiences, including walking safaris and reserves with dangerous game, are only accessible with a guide in the first place.
Meet Your Guides
Our hikes are led by Carol Anthony and Bradden “Hiking” Stevens. Carol is a Gauteng Tourism Board-registered Adventure Guide (Mountain Walking) and Level 3 first aider, with a background as a competitive powerlifter and nutritionist. Bradden is a registered National Nature Guide with a national diploma in Nature Conservation, who spent years guiding at Rietvlei Nature Reserve before going freelance, and has also guided within the Thornybush Game Reserve in the Kruger area. Read their full bios on our team page.
How Our Guided Hikes Work
Hikes are scheduled weekly, with early morning and weekend options, and posted to our events page and WhatsApp group as dates are confirmed. Pricing varies by experience — our shorter guided hikes start from around R300, with fuller experiences like an overnight Bezhoek trip running to R675. Most hikes limit numbers (often to 15–20 guests) to keep the group manageable and the experience personal, so booking ahead is worth doing rather than turning up on the day.
What's Included on a Guided Hike
Exactly what's included varies by experience, but most of our guided hikes cover the guiding itself, entry or access fees where applicable, and safety equipment like a first aid kit. Some experiences add extras — the Vergenoeg/Vulpro hike includes the Vulpro facility visit, and Seeking Sunsets & Chasing Waterfalls includes a night's camping. Always check the specific listing for what's covered and what you'll need to bring yourself, like water, snacks, and appropriate footwear.
