Magaliesberg & North West Hiking

Magaliesberg & North West Hiking

The Magaliesberg range straddles the Gauteng–North West border and is the closest thing to proper mountain hiking within reach of Johannesburg or Pretoria — ridges, kloofs, and rock pools, most of it under an hour’s drive. It’s also where a good chunk of Go Hiking SA’s own guided hikes happen. Here’s the full rundown of where we go and what each spot offers.

B’Sorah

A 1,600-hectare working farm near Hartbeespoort Dam with hiking trails from 5km to 18km, plus mountain biking routes and a swimming spot on one of the cleanest rivers in the country. It’s pet-friendly, which sets it apart from most of the reserves on this list. Read our full B’Sorah write-up for the details.

Olive Tree Farm Walking Safari

A genuine walking safari in the Magaliesberg/Hekpoort area, guided by Bradden Stevens. Hikes go off-trail for around 5km through a conservancy home to giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, eland, and more, with two hides for snack breaks along the way. See the full write-up for what to bring and how to book.

Hennops Hiking Trail

Near Hartbeespoort, around 50 minutes from Johannesburg — suspension bridges, river crossings, and rocky ridgelines across a two-day, two-base-camp route (sections also work as a day hike). One of the more adventurous options in the range.

Muningi Gorge

About 30 minutes outside Pretoria, Muningi Gorge is one of the more accessible entry points into the Magaliesberg proper, with three trails of varying length through ridges, kloofs, and rock pools.

Vergenoeg & the Vulpro Vulture Experience

A 10km hike at Vergenoeg, on the Magaliesberg’s edge, followed by a visit to Vulpro — Africa’s only vulture conservation and rehabilitation centre, near Hartbeespoort. Read the full write-up or book the experience directly.

Why Hike the Magaliesberg With a Guide

The Magaliesberg is more remote and less signposted than Gauteng’s municipal reserves — trails aren’t always obvious, and several of the best spots (Olive Tree Farm, Vergenoeg) are only accessible as part of a guided experience in the first place. Our guides, Carol Anthony and Bradden Stevens, have built most of their most popular routes specifically in this range.

Getting to the Magaliesberg

Most access points sit along the N4 or R512 corridors toward Hartbeespoort and Rustenburg, which makes the range easy to reach whether you’re coming from Johannesburg, Pretoria, or Centurion. If you’re driving yourself rather than joining a guided hike with transport included, confirm the exact meeting point when you book — several of these farms and reserves are on unmarked roads that are easy to miss on a first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Magaliesberg from Johannesburg?

Most access points are 45 to 90 minutes away, depending on which part of the range you’re heading to and where in Johannesburg or Pretoria you’re starting from.

Do I need a guide to hike in the Magaliesberg?

Not for every trail, but several of the best experiences — including Olive Tree Farm and the Vergenoeg/Vulpro hike — are guided-only. For the more remote sections generally, hiking with a group is strongly recommended.

Is the Magaliesberg suitable for beginners?

It varies by trail. B’Sorah’s shorter routes and Muningi Gorge’s easier trail are approachable for beginners; Hennops and the Vergenoeg hike require more fitness.
