Hiking Trails Near Me

Wherever you're based in Gauteng, there's almost certainly a decent hiking trail within half an hour's drive — and, most weeks, one of our guided hikes happening there too. Because “near you” depends entirely on where in Gauteng you're starting from, we've broken down the trails we hike by area, so you can find the closest guided hike to you and simply show up.

How to Find the Right Trail Near You

A few things are worth checking before you commit to whatever a map app has ranked first:

  • Drive time, not straight-line distance — Gauteng traffic can turn a 15km trip into 40 minutes.
  • Whether the trail requires a guide — reserves with dangerous game, like Rietvlei, don't allow unguided hiking.
  • Trail difficulty versus your fitness level — “near me” doesn't mean “easy.”
  • Opening days and hours — a few smaller reserves have restricted access days.
  • Whether dogs, kids, or wheelchairs are catered for, if that matters for your group.

Trails Near Johannesburg North & Sandton

Delta Park in Randburg is the closest useful option if you're based in the northern suburbs — a large municipal park popular for walking, running, and cycling rather than a rugged hike, but a solid choice if you want trails near you without a long drive. For more of a wilderness feel, Modderfontein Nature Reserve in East Johannesburg is roughly 20 minutes from Sandton, with 3km–10km loops through surprisingly varied terrain for an urban reserve. Closer still, Rietfontein Nature Reserve in Paulshof is about 15 minutes from Sandton — a free, easy 2.5km circular trail we've hiked ourselves; see our full Rietfontein guide for the details.

Trails Near Johannesburg South

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve in Kibler Park is the standout — free entry, over 20km of combined trails, and real wildlife sightings (zebra, black wildebeest, springbok) just 10km from the CBD. About 45 minutes further, toward Heidelberg, Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve opens up a much bigger network across 66km of trails, from an easy 4km loop to routes well past 15km.

Trails Near Pretoria & Centurion

Pretoria has some of the best trails-near-me options in Gauteng simply because there are several good reserves within 20 minutes of the CBD. Faerie Glen Nature Reserve has three graded trails from 2.3km to 4.2km, ideal if you want to hike regularly without repeating the same route. Groenkloof Nature Reserve, one of the oldest proclaimed reserves in Africa, offers three trails up to 10.5km. Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve in Moreletapark is another free option with 1.5km–4.6km trails and plenty of wildlife — read our Moreleta Kloof guide. And Rietvlei Nature Reserve, about 20 minutes from central Pretoria, is worth the guided-tour requirement if you want a genuine chance of spotting rhino and buffalo on foot.

Trails Near the West Rand

The West Rand — Roodepoort and surrounds — punches above its weight for hiking trails near Johannesburg. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden has the most scenic single trail on this page, a 3.5km route past the Witpoortjie Waterfall. Kloofendal Nature Reserve, also in Roodepoort, offers close to 15km of trails and is free to enter. Further out, the Cradle of Humankind, B'Sorah (see our write-up), and the edges of the Magaliesberg range (including access points like Muningi Gorge) start to feel like proper mountain hiking rather than an urban walk, while staying within about an hour of most of Johannesburg.

Worth the Drive: Trails Just Outside Gauteng

Once you've worked through the trails close to home, the Mpumalanga escarpment — roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from Johannesburg — delivers a completely different kind of hiking: multi-day slackpacking routes through the Blyde River Canyon area, gorges, and grassland that no Gauteng reserve can match in scale. Not “near me” by any definition, but close enough for a long weekend, and part of the regions we run guided hikes in.

Useful Tools for Finding Hiking Trails Near You

Beyond this page, a couple of tools are worth having on your phone before you head out. AllTrails and Wikiloc both let you filter trails by distance from your current location and show recent reviews, useful for checking whether a reserve is currently well-maintained. It's worth double-checking opening hours and access rules against a reserve's own website or social media too, since these change more often than map listings do — especially for guided-only sections like Rietvlei. If you're heading somewhere with patchy signal, like the Magaliesberg, download your route offline before you leave.

How do I find hiking trails near me in Gauteng?

Start with the reserve closest to your suburb rather than the most-searched name — a smaller local reserve you'll actually use regularly usually beats a famous one that's an hour away. This page groups trails by area to make that easier, and our hike schedule covers most of them.

What's the closest hiking trail to Johannesburg's CBD?

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve and Melville Koppies are both within about 10km of central Johannesburg.

Are there hiking trails near me that are free?

Yes — Klipriviersberg, Melville Koppies, and Kloofendal Nature Reserve are all free to enter, wherever in Gauteng you're closest to.

Can beginners join a hike near them?

Yes. Our guided hikes cater to a range of fitness levels, and several of the trails on this page — like the Hadeda trail at Faerie Glen or the Dassie Trail at Klipriviersberg — are beginner-friendly starting points.
