Carol Anthony

I have hiked socially for many years. I love being outdoors, I love nature and animals and physical challenges and have apassion for conservation. It just seemed right to share my passion with others. So I became an accredited Adventure Guide, Mountain Walking - in simple terms, a hiking guide. I am registered with the Gauteng Tourism Board (Reg No. GP6400) and a Level 3 trained first aider.

When I am not climbing mountains, scrambling over rocks and marveling at nature, I am a competitive powerlifter. I have represented South Africa as a Master Lifter at World, Commonwealth and Africa Champs for the last 10 years and am also a Level 1 International Powerlifting and Weightifting coach. As a nutritionist, I have a special interest in longevity and encourage clients to value good health. I strongly advocate hiking for physical and mental well-being.

My mantra has always been BE the change. If you can make a difference, do. In many ways, hiking allows me to live this truth.

I feel so honoured to partner with Bradden (Hiking) Stevens. He is an amazing field guide with a wealth of experience. We make a great team and together, we would like to share our Wild About Hiking experiences with you.

My passion for adventure, wide open spaces and a drive to share the importance of conserving all who inhabit them started at a young age.

It was therefore only logical that I study Nature conservation (received a national diploma via the Tshwane University of Technology). My practical year, in Namaqua National Park, furthered my interest in the natural world (especially the smaller beauties like insects, reptiles, birds and medicinal plants) which continues to this day. Namaqua also gave me my first taste of guiding, both on foot and in vehicles, confirming my goal of becoming a full-time nature guide.

Upon returning to Pretoria (my hometown) I was offered a part-time opportunity to work within a small lodge in the greater Kruger. Here I was further exposed to guiding, as a tracker within the Thorny Bush Game reserve (a big 5 area) and mini-game drives and walks within the conservancy, where the lodge was situated. I was also to exposed, and helped in daily running of the lodge, such as meal planning, general maintenance and loads more.

After ±8 month I returned to Pretoria, where I came across an opportunity to be a facilitator of school/youth development camps at two operations, one in Brits and the other in Hekpoort (North West province).

An incredible experience, filled with laughter, adventure (we regularly offered activities such as abseiling and archery) and personal growth!

During this time, I was also offered a position at the Rietvlei Coffee Shop to conduct game drives and hikes within the Rietvlei Nature Reserve (Pretoria).

Drives/hikes in the gem so close to the city were, and continue to be awesome! Over time the Coffee shop became more reliant on me, and I eventually became manager and head guide.

During this time, my skills/qualifications (I am now a National Nature Guide reg no. 5058, with First Aid 2) increased dramatically and in 2019, decided I would like to broaden my horizons and went freelance.

Today I still conduct hikes, game drives and environmental educational programs within Rietvlei, as well as visits and camps with youth-based organizations. I am thrilled to be in partnership with Carol (Go Hiking SA). Combining our skills has proven immensely successful (as seen in our popular hikes within the Magaliesberg mountain range and elsewhere)!

The future of Go Hiking SA looks bright and I look forward to sharing this amazing country and all it has to offer with you!
