Vergenoeg/Vulpro Vulture Experience

Go Hiking SA has partnered with Vergenoeg hiking trails and Vulpro to bring you an unforgettable Wild About Hiking Vulture experience.

The day starts with a 10km hike at Vergenoeg, guided by Bradden (National Nature Guide) and myself (National Hiking guide). The trail takes us to the top of the Magaliesburg mountain range where some of the 350 breeding pairs of vultures can be seen launching off the cliffs as they mesmerizingly ride the thermals. A truly special experience to get so close to vultures. 

The hike is followed by a visit to Vulpro, Africa’s only vulture conservation program. Vulpro, near Hartebeespoort dam, is a world class facility which cares for injured vultures. Their aim is to rehabilitate as many of these injured birds as possible. Having the opportunity to see vultures up this close is indescribable. You have to experience it for yourself.

Distance 10km. This hike requires some hiking experience and fitness. It is not recommended for unfit hikers or young children. Shoes with good grip are essential for rock scrambling and more technical parts of the trail.

The views and closeness of the vultures make this exquisite hike worth every step. Not for the uninitiated, but a really great hike.

Following the hike, a 20 minute drive to Vulpro will turn a great hike into an amazing experience. Here we will learn about the phenomenal work done by Vulpro, visit the vulture enclosures, and have the opportunity for a picnic lunch together, rounding off a wonderful Wild About Hiking Vulture experience.
