Description

Dlala Nje is a Johannesburg-based social enterprise and tour operator that runs immersive walking tours in the inner city, including Hillbrow and Yeoville. Founded in 2012, it operates out of the iconic Ponte Tower and uses its tour proceeds to fund community development and youth centers.

Its mission is to challenge negative perceptions and replace fear of misunderstood neighborhoods with authentic, firsthand experiences. Popular offerings include:

  • The Ponte Tower Experience: A tour of Johannesburg’s tallest residential building, offering views from the 51st floor and exploring its history.
  • Raw & Real Hillbrow Walking Tour: A guided walking tour of Hillbrow that often concludes with a pub lunch at a local shebeen.
  • Taste of Africa Foodie Tour: An authentic culinary and cultural experience in Yeoville.
  • The organization reinvests profits into providing safe learning environments, art, and sports for underprivileged children in the community

Ponte City is a 54-story, 173-meter residential skyscraper in Johannesburg, South Africa. Completed in 1975, it features a distinctive cylindrical design with a hollow, open-air core to let in light. It holds the record for Africa’s tallest residential skyscraper and is crowned by the Southern Hemisphere’s largest neon sign

A Rollercoaster History
Designed to be a luxury complex for the privileged class, it offered upscale amenities like in-building saunas and duplexes overlooking downtown Johannesburg. During the late 1980s and 1990s, however, the neighborhood degraded, and Ponte City became notorious as an urban slum controlled by crime syndicates and drug lords. The open inner core turned into a dumping ground for refuse.
Present-Day Transformation
Over the last decade, Ponte City has been heavily refurbished and reclaimed as a safe, affordable property.
  • Apartments: It offers 24-hour fingerprint-access security, free WiFi, and retail spaces.
  • Tours: The inner-city tourism company Dlala Nje operates out of the Ponte City base and offers highly regarded, guided tours of the building and the surrounding Hillbrow neighborhood.
  • The Neon Sign: The massive illuminated sign at its summit currently advertises VodaPay.
